CRYSTAL-CLEAR CREEK & TAIWAN JADE HUNTING
Hualien's most family-friendly canyon: shallow crystal pools, natural slides, and hunting for Fengtian jade with a 4,000-year Austronesian trading history. Ages 6+, optional packraft add-on.

Baibao Creek sits beside Liyu Lake in Shoufeng Township and is widely considered one of Hualien's clearest streams. The route starts with a swim across a long emerald pool and weaves through boulder cascades and natural rock slides — kids can touch the bottom in the shallows, and guides stay within arm's reach at every deep pool. It's the most family-friendly of our four routes, open to ages 6 and up, with two half-day sessions: morning (09:00–12:00) and afternoon (13:00–16:00). What makes Baibao Creek truly special is the jade. Four thousand years ago, Fengtian jade (Taiwan jade) quarried here traveled across Southeast Asia and Oceania with Austronesian seafarers. Along the way, your guide will show you how to spot serpentinite and jade in the streambed — every stone a child turns over is a small treasure hunt. Freshwater crabs, fish, and shrimp make the creek a nature class kids won't want to leave. Want the full experience? Choose the full-day session (09:00–16:00, NT$2,600 per person, lunch included): push upstream into a rarely visited stretch of the canyon, finishing at a magnificent grand waterfall with a creekside lunch before heading back. The full day covers more distance and requires decent fitness — the half-day sessions have no fitness requirement at all. You can also add a packraft (+NT$300 per person, private groups of 5 or fewer) to paddle the calm deep-pool section. Gear, insurance, and full photography included.
