Family Activities in Hualien
Canyoning Kids Can Join from Age 8

Bringing kids to Hualien? Beyond the ocean park and the farms, there's one experience the whole family will remember for life: canyoning. It sounds extreme, but on a professionally guided beginner route, children as young as 8 can join safely — and they usually have even more fun than the adults. Here's what parents need to know about safety, ages, and planning.

Is canyoning safe for kids?

Under professional leadership, beginner canyoning is a remarkably safe activity for children. Three things make it so: certified helmets and life vests worn at all times, one-on-one supervision from guides trained in first aid and rescue, and routes chosen at entry-level difficulty. Our guides adjust the pace to each child's age, fitness, and the day's water conditions, demonstrating every move slowly — no rushing, no pressure. We've kept a 100% safety record since opening.

From what age can kids join?

All four routes welcome children aged 8 and up. The age minimum ensures a child can understand and follow basic safety instructions and that the gear fits securely. The weight limit is 110 kg (harness sizing). Non-swimmers are completely fine — life vests stay on the whole time and a guide stays close.

Which route is best for families?

Triple Waterfall Canyon (top pick for first-timers)

Triple Waterfall Canyon is the closest route to Hualien City (meeting at Ji'an Station) and entry-level throughout. The 35-meter triple waterfall looks epic, but the route itself is gentle and easy to manage — the best first canyoning trip for families, at NT$3,000 per person.

Xilin Secret Canyon

Xilin Secret Canyon is also beginner-level, famous for its 30-meter waterfall rappel and the rare S-shaped waterfall. The look on a kid's face after completing that rappel is priceless.

💡 Guides photograph and film the whole trip, so parents can play instead of holding a phone — and go home with a full record of their kid's bravest day.

Parents' most-asked questions

What if my child is afraid of water or heights?

Beginner routes flex to each child's pace. Guides start in shallow water so kids get comfortable with the gear and the feeling, and every rappel has a guide securing from beside. Most kids fall in love with it right after their first descent — and nobody is ever forced. Safety always comes first.

What should we pack?

Bring quick-dry clothes that can get wet (swimwear or polyester — avoid cotton), a change of clothes, a towel, and a dry bag. All technical gear is provided. See the beginner's guide to Hualien canyoning for details.

How does it fit into a family itinerary?

Canyoning takes only half a day, so it's easy to plan around: canyon in the morning, then Qixingtan Beach or downtown in the afternoon — a full day without feeling rushed. See the Hualien outdoor day-trip itinerary for a complete plan.
